Our son was admitted for hernia surgery to the Medical/Surgical floor. The day after, he went into detox withdrawal and was moved to the Intensive Care Unit, intubated and sedated. After 3 days, and on several medications to help with his withdrawals there was little improvement. He was still hallucinating, anxious and had uncontrollable tremors. Miranda, one of the nurses caring for him in the ICU, noticed that his symptoms should have improved. She took extra time to research the side effects of each medication, learning that several had side effects similar to what he was experiencing. She notified the hospitalist who agreed to take him off of some of the medications and this made a remarkable difference. Our son recovered and was able to go home the following day because Miranda went above and beyond to help our son.
