Mollie's warm thoughts on my recovery provided a motivational shot of care.
I arrived on Friday afternoon and it wasn't until Mollie's shift, which started at 3:00, Saturday morning, in which this caring story takes place. Mollie came in at 3:00 to take vitals and introduced herself as the nurse who would be taking care of me. Her presence filled the room and her mature and confident demeanor settled me down finally - to a place where I could rest/sleep. She returned several times through the morning and at 9:00 while checking my vitals, she looked at my right arm which was covered in bandaged needles and floppy ports, and decided to do some arm cleaning. She removed several unnecessary extra ports and band-aids all the while explaining their uses and why they were NOW unnecessary. Afterward, she cleaned my arm, brought me some ice-cold water and some requested ice cream. This may seem routine to others, but it was her presence for two days that made this situation holistic. Her uniform was spotless (very professional) and her speech was clear and educated yet always in a tone of humility and caring. Her sincerity and honesty reached boldly into our light conversations and her warm thoughts on my recovery provided a motivational shot of care. Afterward, she would walk across the room and provide the same compassionate care to my roommate (an 80 yr old Vet). I realize hospitals are meant to provide healing for sicknesses and diseases, but a compassionate, caring soul can reach further into the lives of people and bring about a healing that transcends machines, colored pills, and sterile walls. I was so fortunate. Thank You, Mollie!
