Monica is leading the sepsis work for the CHI Franciscan Health. She is a passionate advocate for sepsis care, who is engaging in her demeanor and committed to improving patient outcomes. Monica facilitates the Regional Sepsis Leadership Team and collaborates with the sepsis performance team leadership at each facility with the goal of improving the care of the patients with sepsis in our organization. Severe sepsis and septic shock (degrees of sepsis) result in a significant mortality rate and impacts a substantial section of our patient population. Monica has been co-leading the implementation of the process improvement strategy of ED Code Sepsis teams at each site. This work has involved developing a standardized process for the immediate response and care of a potential sepsis patient by the ED team, developing standardized tools/educational posters/badge buddies for staff use, and frequent communication with the site-based team members. Monica's positive attitude and approach are infectious to those around her. She often expresses appreciation to her colleagues as they work to positively affect the lives of those in our care.

Monica is an exceptional nurse with so much to offer CHI FH. She has poured herself into improving care for patients who are admitted with or suspected of having sepsis. Sepsis is one of the leading causes of mortality and Monica (with her team) are taking great strides in reducing this incidence among CHI FH hospitals. She is co-leading a team to improve the care provided to these patients by asking the tough questions of providers and nurses and helping to create a new model of care. She is bringing forward best practices and has helped to organize an evidence-based plan to effectively treat these critical patients to meet the standard of care. She has spent the last year working with the sepsis teams to understand the current state, facilitating a team to improve the current state and organize a detailed roll-out plan for the improvement of care. She is helping facilitate the sepsis roadshow at each site so that they are ready for the new plan. The roadshow encompasses running a code sepsis, sharing materials for the staff to use, ensuring that staff understand the expectations, and being available to answer questions. Phenomenal work that will improve the lives of our patients!
