It is my honor to nominate Nancy Lorber for receipt of the DAISY Award. I have known and worked closely with Nancy for more than a year now. Her contributions to the implementation and maintenance of our new Palliative Care Service are invaluable. She is bright and a great problem solver. She is able to foresee potential problems and is proactive at dealing with them before they become an issue. She isn’t someone that comes to work and puts in her time. She is dedicated to and genuinely loves her job. She goes the extra mile to assure success of our services and patient satisfaction.
For example, Nancy noticed that our hospital bereavement services were not meeting the needs of our community. She took it upon herself to assemble and head a great team to develop and implement our new Bereavement Program. She even acquired funding for the program by applying for a grant. I believe there is no task that she would find insurmountable.
Nancy is also a successful scholar, which has been amply demonstrated in her prior outstanding academic achievements. She is a person with a continuous thirst for knowledge who will actively seek learning opportunities throughout her life and career. She continually reinforces her strong knowledge base by sharing it with others. She is a highly respected mentor for our nursing residents, as well as providing many educational presentations to other hospital employees and the community at large. She recently presented the new Bereavement Program to our hospital leadership and routinely presents to our community long term care facilities.
In addition, Nancy has excellent clinical skills. Not only is she technically capable, she also has the people skills to explain to her patients what she is doing and why, helping them to be more comfortable. She listens to their concerns and compassionately addresses them. She is able to skillfully manage difficult and emotionally challenging conversations. We have received many calls and letters from patients and families thanking her for her compassion and caring. Certainly Nancy is one of the best nurses I’ve ever worked with, whether in the hospital, ambulatory, long term care or Hospice setting.
Beyond that, I would say that Nancy is in the top 10 people that I have ever worked with in any capacity. She makes my job easier. More importantly, she makes a powerful, positive difference in the lives of our patients, their families and all of her coworkers. It is my sincere hope that you will honor her with this award.
