The patient broke down and explained that this student’s compassion allowed them to feel comfortable around the student, and she trusted her to tell her things.
This student was assigned to a patient with cognitive abnormalities who had been admitted for an extended time. Nurses on the hall had developed a preconceived notion that the patient was difficult to work with and avoided the patient as much as possible even if they had never taken care of them. This student took the time to sit with the patient and talk with them. After a short period of time, the patient really enjoyed this student’s company and explained that no one believed them or would help. This student was able to focus on the patient in a holistic approach and look through the wall that the patient had put up because of the treatment from the other nurses. This student also took the time to remind the patient several times throughout the shifts, why she was unable to have certain foods and liquids in regard to her safety secondary to her cognitive abnormalities. The patient was difficult to work with at times, but the student remained so caring and patient throughout the process. The student continued to show compassionate care throughout the two days of clinical with this patient, along with taking care of other patients.

This student cared for a patient who was positive for illicit drugs after having a baby. In report, the nurses said a few things that alluded that the patient was a “typical druggy” and just get in and get out with patient care. This student sat with the patient and talked with them during her morning assessment taking time to get to know them. The patient opened up about past issues that led them to drug use and that they wanted to take care of their baby the best way they could. This student encouraged and walked with the patient to the SCN to sit with the patient and their baby several times throughout the shift. The patient broke down and explained that this student’s compassion allowed them to feel comfortable around the student, and she trusted her to tell her things.

This student shows extraordinary compassionate care with every single patient she comes across, whether she is in direct care or helping out other nurses and classmates during clinical. This student continues to go above and beyond to allow patients to feel comfortable, heard, and safe.
