I would like to nominate Necy Reyes, RN, PICU. We have been dealing with this family for a lot of psychosocial issues. The family is full of anger and hatred; they have created a lot of conflicts with our nurses. They have raised issue regarding the nursing care received by their daughter...until today:
Today Necy Reyes made an extraordinary care service that, in the eyes of the family, they will remember this day as being full of happy memories. It was the birthday of the patient's father and the family had a mini-celebration in our waiting room. Necy and Leah took the initiative to make sure the patient was part of their celebration. The patient is MRCP with tracheostomy and being sprinted. Necy helped prepare the patient for the party, fixed her hair, and helped her put on her nice dress. Necy and Leah took the time to set up the monitor, the oxygen and put the patient in the wheelchair and brought her to the waiting room for the party. They stayed with the patient all the time and witnessed the family celebration.
I saw in the father's eyes how proud he is with his daughter, how happy he was to have her in the waiting room for a few minutes to celebrate this day with him. I saw how much happiness the patient is feeling even though she is non-verbal, from her continuous smile and knowing how beautiful she is for her father's birthday party.
This was a special day for both father and daughter because of special nurses like Necy who are willing to go above and beyond to provide an extraordinary experience for the patient and her family.
