Following my time of grieving at my brother-in-law’s bedside, giving my hugs, and then moving to the back of the room, I noticed Nichole still standing over by the door inside the room. For the next 2 hours, I observed Nichole’s presence.
My brother-in-law was brought in after being unresponsive at Patoka Lake, and unfortunately, he passed away in your ER at the age of 53. When my wife and I arrived at the ER after knowing he had already passed away, we were met at the door by my niece and Nichole, who escorted us back to the room to be with the rest of the family present. As you might imagine, we were all in shock, and it was an overwhelmingly emotional experience. Following my time of grieving at my brother-in-law’s bedside, giving my hugs, and then moving to the back of the room, I noticed Nichole still standing over by the door inside the room. For the next 2 hours, I observed Nichole’s presence. I do not recall hearing her say a word, though I have no doubt she did at some point with my sister-in-law or her in-laws. I felt her presence, and I saw her come and go with the family. At one point, I walked outside and saw her standing and speaking with my mother-in-law. Later, at the request of my niece, Nichole assisted in getting her dad’s wedding band off so she could keep it. When it was finally time for the family to leave, she stood beside the bed patiently. As I knelt in prayer and sobbed at the bedside, I knew she was standing over me. I exited the room and did not see Nichole again. I wanted to say something to her, but I just could not bring myself to it without looking like a blubbering fool. I am sure Nichole, as do all of your ER staff, has to be in situations like this more than any of us can imagine, but I know that I felt her presence, and I hope that, in some way, she was put there by God for a reason I may never know.
