Nicole was able to build enough trust with this patient, and he told her he was driving around Lexington and was soon stopped in a parking lot. Nicole convinced the patient to stay where he was so they could finish his conversation, but in reality, she kept him there until the police arrived.
Nicole is an outstanding nurse. I have never met anyone who is as strong, compassionate, and caring as she is. Every patient that comes into contact with her has been changed forever. One specific example, was when Nicole was making route phone calls to patients in clinic and something told her to call this particular patient. When she called this patient, he seemed a little down and was using vague phases about wanting to get an amputation of his leg. Depression is something that we deal with on a daily basis in our clinic, but something about the way the patient was talking and beating around the bush stood out to Nicole. Seemingly out of nowhere, Nicole asked the patient if he wanted to harm himself or someone else. The patient only stated that he wanted to end it all. Nicole asked if he had a plan to harm himself, and he stated that he didn’t really, but if he would do it, he would do it this way. At this point, Nicole had a suicidal patient on the phone. Her quick thinking got the Nurse Manager and Social Worker involved to help this patient while she stayed on the phone with him. Nicole asked the patient where he was or if anyone was with him, and the patient simply replied, I would rather not answer, and if you send the cops to my house, I will just have them kill me. Nicole was able to change the topic from this to his dogs that he loves to keep the patient on the phone while the Nurse Manger and Social Worker worked with the police to find this patient. At this point the patient was still refusing to tell Nicole where he was or what he was doing. About thirty minutes into the conversation, Nicole was able to build enough trust with this patient, and he told her he was driving around Lexington and was soon stopped in a parking lot. Nicole convinced the patient to stay where he was so they could finish his conversation, but in reality, she kept him there until the police arrived. Nicole was able to tell the Nurse Manager and Social Worker who told the police where this patient was located. After Nicole had been on the phone with this patient for about an hour, the patient told her that he had to go because there were five cop cars around his car and then hung up. The Social Worker told the clinic that the police had the patient and they were taking him the Eastern State Hospital for help. Due to Nicole’s compassion, teamwork, and quick thinking, this patient was able to get the help he needed, and when he came to the clinic a week later, he stated he was thankful to be alive! It is my opinion that Nicole is a DAISY Nurse for not only saving a life but also because when she was thanked for helping, she only replied, I was just doing my job. She is an Extraordinary Nurse who gives extraordinary care!
