I am not even sure where to start when trying to explain the reasons that make Nikki a DAISY Nurse. Nikki is truly the nurse that I someday hope to be. She is incredibly knowledgeable and is always willing to share that knowledge with her fellow staff. The best is that when sharing this knowledge, Nikki is always patient and excited to teach others. She never has a condescending tone and is never impatient with anyone. You can tell she truly loves what she does. Nikki pays attention to details and is always her patient's biggest advocate. Just recently Nikki had a patient who had been on our unit for a long period of time. She came on shift and immediately noticed small changes in the patient that she felt needed further interventions. Nikki did everything she could to improve the patient's status and comfort. She spent hours at their side calling doctors, working with respiratory, and even was able to have an ICU nurse come up to check on the patient. She did all of this with a full team of other patients, while giving a chemotherapy infusion, and assisting others with IV placements. Because of Nikki's close attention to detail and her persistence that something was wrong, this patient received orders to be transferred to ICU. Unfortunately, right before transfer this patient code blued. Nikki stayed calm and immediately started CPR. She assisted the code team until the patient was taken to ICU and then made another call to the family. I was next to her during this call and Nikki could not have been more professional and caring.
