Watching this man light up as Olivia worked with him was truly special. She brought so much peace and comfort to him on one of the hardest days of his life.
I have taught Olivia for the past two semesters in both the lab and clinical environment. Most recently, I have worked with her on the Oncology floor. She has brought such a bright light to an area of medicine that can be overwhelmingly sad on most days. During her second day of clinical, I assigned her to a patient with very complex medical needs. I knew this would be a challenging assignment, but that Olivia would take it in stride. At the beginning of the shift, she was nervous. She stepped up though and provided the most compassionate care I could ever expect from a nurse (let alone a student) to this patient and his family. Watching her take such great care of this patient was so rewarding, and reminded me of why I wanted to be a teacher. Olivia has a tendency to bring a smile to people's faces. Watching this man light up as Olivia worked with him was truly special. She brought so much peace and comfort to him on one of the hardest days of his life. Her efforts were recognized and called out to me by the nursing staff, as well as by a number of medical personnel on his team. Olivia got to know this patient and his wife very well, and his wife requested her to provide teaching and provide his care. This patient, unfortunately, went into hospice care. He was still admitted the next week in clinical, and instead of shying away from an emotionally difficult assignment, Olivia was grateful to spend more time with this patient and his family. The wife was so excited to see her again and proclaimed "It's my Thursday girl!" when she walked into the room. Olivia was at his side as he took his last breath, and provided comfort to his wife. She did this with so much empathy and compassion. These skills are hard to develop to that level, even for a seasoned nurse (and this was only her second day). I am blown away by the level of care she has provided to this patient, and others. She brought so much comfort and peace to the family and touched their lives. Olivia has a long career ahead of her and is going to touch so many lives. She is the kind of nurse I strive to be, and her patients are so lucky to have her!
