Paige showed amazing growth in her clinical knowledge, critical thinking, and clinical judgement skills. She had multiple areas of opportunities identified in the beginning of the rotation. After only six clinical shifts, by the end of the rotation, she was able to confidently make appropriate connections in her patients’ clinical pictures and prioritize their care. She displayed the most growth I have seen from a student and her hard work was evident in her progress. One area she excelled in from the very beginning, though, was compassion. As nurse educators, we know we can teach the skills and knowledge. But, one thing we cannot teach a student to do is to be compassionate. Paige’s kindness and empathy she showed her patients throughout the clinical rotation made it clear that she was born to be a nurse. She received countless remarks from nurses and patients alike about her positive demeanor and comforting bedside manner. That is something that stood out to me about Paige from the beginning was how natural communicating with patients came to her.
