While caring for one of their oncology patients, H, it was discovered that the patient would miss her senior graduation photos. Without missing a beat, the pediatric nurses shared this information with the entire staff and nurses started to volunteer time, resources, and talents. In preparing for the photo shoot nurses brought in dresses, jewelry, make-up, specially made graduation year signage, and their own children’s graduation decorations.
On the day of, Elizabeth Berkebile set up her camera to take test shots prior to starting the photo shoot. Ebonee Givens and Doug Giampietro acquired a photo backdrop and set up for the location of the photo shoot. Michelle Garcia did H’s make-up and Grace Sekayan the unit manager curler and styled her hair. Leilani Quesada even came in on her day off to drop off some fake flowers and decorative pieces to add some fresh color to the scenery. Photography of H for her shoot memorializes the fun she had throughout her morning. She was dressed up in various outfits and given time to take photos while resting as needed in between. It was a moment that none of the nurses would forget.; and while they were immediately involved in the events of the day or not, all the staff were excited to share this moment with H. KP Public Affairs featured H’s story on the KP Instagram and soon after it was picked up by local newspapers.
For a moment in time, H, her family, and the nursing staff were able to set aside the fear and anxiety of COVID-19, and just focus on a beautiful moment that washed all stress away. When it comes to compassionate and quality care, the pediatric nurses at Fontana Medical Center never fail to deliver and continuously give 110% of themselves for their patients. H’s story is just one example of the pediatric nurses going above and beyond to make their patients feel safe and happy.
