On Christmas day Peggy Kattenberg RN was the charge nurse for 5 South at SFMC. The day was very hectic with numerous admissions and transfers from other departments. There was an elderly gentleman patient who was terminal and dying from liver failure. This patient's wife had unfortunately been admitted to the hospital herself. Each room at SFMC is a single private room so they started out in separate rooms. Peggy made it possible for both the husband, who was dying, and the wife who was scheduled for surgery to be placed in the same room together so they and their family could celebrate Christmas together. The husband and wife were able to spend their last Christmas together because unfortunately the husband passed away the very next day. It can be quite timely and taxing to get all of the equipment, supplies and set up to place 2 patients in one room, especially when the unit is already close to capacity, but without any complaint or question, Peggy made the decision to make this happen for this couple and their family. This was done in a very timely fashion and the family was quite appreciative of her hard work and dedication.
