I have been in the hospital for over six weeks following septic shock. The first five weeks were spent in Geneva, Switzerland where I currently live and originally became ill. I was medevac'd to Inova Fairfax for continued medical care. During this time, I have worked with innumerable great nurses, but Rabiatu is exceptional. I will remember her fondly for the rest of my life.
Characteristics which will stay with me include her genuine compassion, gentleness, listening ear, creative problem solving, proactively reaching out, not just waiting to be called but checking in on me regularly, warm laughter, sincere care and interest in me as a person not just as a patient. I am grateful that she has been my nurse at Inova Fairfax.
All these qualities shone through in one particular instance when I was feeling sick from chronic nausea. Not only did she bring me my medicine, but she sat with me until I began to feel better. Her calming presence, kindness and willingness to stay with me were powerful medicine. She was clearly not just doing her job, she genuinely cared.
