Ray sacrificed his personal time to help out a fellow vet in need and established trust in the VA's ability to care for his mental well-being.
This past week, I triaged a veteran in crisis. This veteran was tearful and verbalized numerous stressors and "just needed help." He was concerned about losing his job relating to seeking help for his Mental Health. I reassured him and placed him in an ED bed. This was very close to shift change, but I knew what this vet needed and immediately went to Ray.
I told Ray, "I know it is close to shift change, and this is not your patient, but I need you to go talk to this vet and reassure him that he is in the right space." Even though he was not the primary nurse, Ray went and sat down with this veteran. He continued to talk and built a rapport for over an hour after his shift ended. He made the personal connection that is sorely lacking in today’s healthcare environment. Ray sacrificed his personal time to help out a fellow vet in need and established trust in the VA's ability to care for his mental well-being. This is just one example, but Ray does this with every single interaction with his patients and coworkers. Ray has a gift of communicating and connecting with fellow veterans that immediately puts them at ease and helps to de-escalate veterans in times of crisis. His special skillset is valued and appreciated.
