It was evident that Rita had spoken with my dad extensively.
Last Thursday, my 87-year-old dad had outpatient surgery. There was quite a bit of anxiety associated with this surgery due to the heart and lung issues my dad has, as well as his age. The surgery went well but he experienced very high blood pressure in recovery. The recovery nurse, Rita, made every effort to comfort and reassure my dad. Of course, she also called his Dr to determine what needed to be done to bring down his blood pressure. When she came to me to explain why he was in recovery so long, it was evident that she had spoken with my dad extensively, no doubt in part to get his mind off of the alarms going off but also to learn a bit about his life so that she could also encourage him with her words as well as to better understand why he was so anxious. She reassured me of his progress in recovery, asked me questions about my dad and answered all of my questions while explaining his condition. When he was finally brought to his room, Rita followed him while continuing to reassure and encourage him. She was so kind and compassionate, even giving him a hug before she left him in the care of the nurse in his room. When she left, my dad commented on what a good nurse she was. We both very much appreciated her concern, care, and compassion.

Note: This is Rita's 2nd DAISY Award!
