My Aunt E was a patient at CFVHS who underwent a high risk surgical procedure last autumn. Unfortunately, she developed severe complications and she began to decline rapidly. Aunt E was a beloved wife and mother and this was a very heart wrenching experience for her family. Her husband, Uncle E and her 6 children tearfully and prayerfully struggled with end of life decisions. They wanted to honor Aunt E's wishes but you can imagine the agony of the decisions they faced. Uncle E wanted to make sure that his 6 children did not blame him for pulling the plug on their momma, and the children wanted their daddy to know that they understood the painful decision before him and above all, that they loved and supported him.

As an extended family member and nurse, I did all that I could to offer guidance and support to Uncle E and my cousins, but realized that we desperately needed expert assistance. I reached out to Robin Kivett, our Palliative Care Coordinator.

It was a weekend and all 6 children were present to discuss these ominous decisions. Robin graciously came in and expertly guided this loving family through these most difficult decisions. As I sat and listened as part of the family meeting, I was blessed by Robin's skillful art of conducting end-of-life discussion. Ultimately, the family withdrew life support and they were all present in the final moments of Aunt E's life. Robin's compassion was palpable and unfailing for this grieving family. She was an integral part of this painful but positive experience that honored Aunt E and her precious family.
