Because of Ross’s initiative, my grandfather had an EEG test done which lead to his transfer to McHenry Hospital where he received continuous EEG monitoring. Within 72 hours of his original admission, he was intubated and admitted to the ICU, in which if he would have been discharged there is a strong chance he wouldn’t be with us today.
On March 9, 2023, my grandfather, was admitted to Huntley Hospital with what they called at the time “transient global amnesia”. He was originally just admitted overnight for observation because at that time his symptoms were intermittent, and he was appearing to be rather stable.  His symptoms included “episodes” where he would “zone out” for a period of time then startle awake and have moments of confusion. He was seen by the neurologist and at that time was having no symptoms and appeared to be normal. We were told this would all improve with time and that he should follow up with outpatient neurology in the future and that the plan was to discharge later that day. As I am a nurse myself, I knew something was not right with the whole situation and I wasn’t comfortable with that but as the neurologist had seen, he was appearing to be normal. I was at work that day so his wife and daughter were with him and started to notice the symptoms occurring again.  They informed the nurse (Ross) who then showed impeccable nursing judgment and critical thinking abilities to know that this needed to be observed by the neurologist before being discharged. It is because of Ross, who did not just brush off the symptoms like others had done, that my grandfather is still alive today. Luckily, after a month in McHenry Hospital and the diagnosis of a rare autoimmune disorder, my grandfather is in rehab and is making a full recovery! I could write a full novel about his journey to his diagnosis but the MAIN reason we are where we are today is because of the incredible efforts of Nurse Ross. Thank you, Ross, for all that you did!
