Rosemary Nganga, RN
LT Rosemary Nganga is nominated for the PHS DAISY Award for her outstanding leadership, advancing health equity, and teamwork at the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) at FCI Englewood, Littleton, Colorado, from January 2023 to September 2023. FCI Englewood houses approximately 960 male inmates on different security levels. LT Nganga arrived at FCI Englewood during a critical medical staff shortage. She immediately worked on quality improvement projects such as Colorectal cancer screening, and a program review step.
Accomplishments/Impact:
•She authored a collaborative quality improvement project with the Clinical Director at FCI Englewood for Colorectal cancer screening (A program review step). LT Nganga became the coordinator for colorectal Cancer screening. She completed over 375 encounters with over 340 inmates who had never screened for colon cancer. Provided education and performed the immunochemical fecal occult blood tests. Twenty-one inmates tested positive and were recommended for further screening with at least one confirmed Cancer diagnosis. Increased FCI Englewood Colorectal cancer screening from a low of 1% in December 2022 to a high of 98.2% in September 2023 (Discovered 21 positive cases who continue with further screening).
