Ruth took time to wash her hair, put it up in a bun, paint her nails, and get her dressed.
Ruth was caring for a patient on 5 South and developed a special connection with her. The patient told her that her niece was getting married that afternoon and that she was sad she was missing it since she was in the hospital. The patient was COVID positive, so she could not have any visitors. Ruth made it her goal for the day to help the patient have the best experience possible.
When her daughter planned to call so the patient could watch, Ruth called the House Supervisor and asked if there were any nice tops in the comfort closet. They were able to find a sparkly sweater that the patient put on over her gown. The nursing assistant she was working with went to Weis over their lunch break and picked up a cupcake and sparkling grape juice with a wine cup, so she could "toast" and have "wedding cake" with the rest of the family. They also got her lipstick and matching nail polish. Ruth took time to wash her hair, put it up in a bun, paint her nails, and get her dressed. They cleared off the patient's bedside table with exception of the drink, cupcake, and flowers.
The nursing assistant downloaded the Duo app on his tablet so the patient could watch on a bigger screen. The wedding was at 3 pm, so by 2:30 pm they did her vital signs, helped her use the bathroom, and then settled her in the chair so that they could give her an hour to enjoy the wedding. The patient got to see everything and talk to her niece. She was full of smiles the rest of the evening.
