This young man walked down our hall and into his mom’s room while the staff cheered for him. The principal and family were waiting in the room, and he officially graduated in front of his mom.
Sam came to the MedSurg floors a few years ago as a new nurse. I have watched her grow so much, and I am continuously amazed at the compassion and empathy she shows her patients. Recently, she was caring for a patient who, at a young age, was battling cancer. Her son was set to graduate high school in just a few short weeks. During this time, the patient continued to decline rapidly but refused to transition to hospice because she promised her son that she would be there to watch him graduate. However, the patient continued to decline and was unable to make medical decisions any longer. The family decided to transition to hospice. Sam, being every bit of amazing, refused to let this patient die without seeing her son graduate. So, Sam arranged for her son to graduate early with his cap and gown. This young man walked down our hall and into his mom’s room while the staff cheered for him. The principal and family were waiting in the room, and he officially graduated in front of his mom. It was a moment that not only family will treasure, but us co-workers too. Sam is more than amazing; she is extraordinary!!
