Sandy was my son's nurse for several days of his PICU stay following his 4th open heart surgery. My son had a very difficult and lengthy surgery and was very ill. Sandy was his nurse on his first full day in the PICU. She created a calming environment by playing soft music, using lavender scented hand sanitizer, and spoke quietly in a calm and nurturing voice which put my son and his extremely anxious parents at ease. Sandy went about her work efficiently, methodically, and with great care. She provided me, the child's mother, with the hope and confidence that my child would get better. Throughout the week that my son was in the PICU, I leaned on Sandy when I was unsure, and she responded with great kindness. She exemplifies what it is to be a Nurse providing medical care with compassion for the patient and the family.
