Sarah was downsized early one day due to census, and we had a patient who was rapidly declining on the unit that Sarah had made a special connection with. The patient's family members were unable to make it to the hospital until 5 pm, so Sarah sat with the patient and held her hand until they made it here, even though she was off the clock. When I told her that I appreciate her for sitting there and holding this patient's hand, she said, "All I know is that if this was my mom, I would want someone to do this for her." Sarah went way above and beyond the call of duty for this patient and did so without thinking twice. Sarah is an outstanding nurse and deserves this award.
