She advocated for mom’s physical health when she could not do it herself while also supporting her emotional health. Only because of her input was an ultrasound done on mom, and the abscess was found.
My grandfather was one of Sarah’s patients. He underwent a radical surgery and ended up experiencing a heart attack once transferred to her floor for recovery. Rather than dismissing his signs and symptoms as typical post op behavior due to his pre-existing conditions in combination with the nature of his surgery, Sarah chose to make his concerns a priority. Not only did she provide prompt care, but she also took the time to keep us informed of my grandfather’s treatment and status. Her extensive knowledge was showcased with each action that she took. We never had to worry about my grandfather while he was in her care. Sarah is extremely diligent, kind, and thoughtful, acting with true compassion for her job and her patients. She always wore a smile that truly brightened the room every time she came in, and she made it a point to explain every detail of his care in terms that would be understood by each family member who was present. I am thankful that Sarah was one of the nurses to take care of my grandfather.
Being in nursing school, I have a somewhat unique perspective on the subject of complete patient care. Oftentimes during my clinical rotations at various hospitals, and even with my current employment, I am pushed to be a better nurse with the stipulation to not fully mimic those I am learning from. This is not in the sense that their actions are wrong or unjust, but this is framed more in the outlook of not becoming burnt out. Nursing is an extremely stressful career that very often can be taken for granted. Over time, stress from the responsibilities of patient care, mixed with the exhaustion and guilt from having those emotions, tend to replace the true compassion that inspires the choice to become a nurse.
Sarah is a nurse that I can only hope to come close to being like once I graduate. We have an assembly every semester on the first day of school where we take some time to recognize and speak about the importance of the DAISY Award. Sarah is one of the few nurses I have had the opportunity to witness as a true living example of the high expectations set with this award and this nomination. She is unaffected by the threat of burnout in her career, and she has never faltered from her compassion with her work. Sarah’s professionalism envelopes the same core values from our school’s Mission Statement that we are taught daily to strive to uphold: altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice.
If I graduate with only half of the compassion that she possesses, I will consider myself extremely lucky. I am truly grateful to have had the chance to witness such extraordinary nursing in practice.

From the moment my dad got to his room Sarah was smiling, positive, and compassionate. She is the perfect example of the true meaning of patient/family advocate. She listened to us (family), answered our questions patiently, always gentle with my dad, and knowledgeable. I am so thankful that my dad was in her care, I could not have hoped for a better experience in this stressful and emotional time.

Sarah took care of my father while he was recovering from surgery. He did have some complications, but she was very proactive, provided exceptional nursing care, and was very kind. She is an incredible patient advocate and greatly assisted with patient/provider/family communication. Sarah is a great nurse, and we are so blessed that she took care of all of us.

She was very conscious and provided excellent during our entire stay.

Sarah was the only nurse that day who listened to my suspicions about what was wrong. I sat in the ER for over 8 hours with them running tests & not knowing why I was sick. Once I was moved to her floor, she began asking questions. She finally realized we needed an ultrasound to see what was going on. Got the doctor to order it (for which he took credit). Within an hour, I was matched up with a surgeon and in surgery. She is my hero! And she checked on me during her day off.

I brought my wife to the ER and stayed there for nine hours. We were then moved to a room. Didn’t seem to us that anything had been done to alleviate the problem. Sarah came in, and after assessing the situation, she made things happen. Within a few minutes an ultrasound technician was here, and it wasn’t 30 minutes after that a surgeon and anesthesiologist were here making plans to have surgery immediately. Without Sarah’s intervention, my wife would have likely suffered for many more hours and continued to decline. Fever was gone by the time they brought her back to the room two hours later. Sarah has followed up with us every day that she’s worked in the hospital and has called to check on my wife on her days off. She has gone above and beyond caring for us and making sure we were comfortable. She has been a great blessing to us! Her pleasant personality and joy are contagious. We have had great care during the several days we have been here. There have been many staff members here that we thought were awesome, but Sara has been exceptional!

Sarah provided my mother with the best care humanly possible. My mom came in with fever after undergoing chemo. This was only her 2nd treatment, and we were scared of what was going on in her body. My mom was not treated very well before Sarah was assigned to us. Sarah was a delight to get to know and explained everything to us in ways that we could understand. She advocated for mom’s physical health when she could not do it herself while also supporting her emotional health. Only because of her input was an ultrasound done on mom, and the abscess was found. She was extremely attentive and did everything she could to make sure that mom received adequate treatment. She even contacted us after her shift to check on mom days later. St. Francis is blessed to have her as a nurse in this hospital. She demands that all her patients are treated equally.

She was just amazing; she went above and beyond her duties. So caring.

She was very sweet when talking to my father-in-law and spent time with him while taking care of him during his hospital stay. She took a general interest in his well-being. You could tell she enjoyed her job, not just there as a job.
