My husband and I are very active, healthy sailboat racers; not your typical retirees. Out of the blue, my husband was severely short of breath, couldn’t walk up the driveway, was weak, and had to sleep in a chair. As a former Radiology Technologist, all I could see was the worst. After a month on medications to prepare him for cardioversion, I was exhausted from lack of sleep and lots of worry that he would stop breathing in the night; that I was going to lose my best friend and become a young widow, or that he would be debilitated and our entire retirement would change. The cardioversion was complete. The doctor told me the surgery was successful and that my husband was in sims rhythm.
Now we wait to see if it stays that way; only time will tell. Our future life was flashing before my eyes… and then I met Scott. Scott had cared for my husband during his procedure and came to the waiting room to update me on how he was doing. Scott immediately realized all may be well with my husband but not with me. He asked if I had any questions. I told him I had more questions than answers. So, Scott sat down and discussed my husband’s condition; the purpose and result of his cardioversion, and what we can expect in the near and long term future. I know it must have been a busy day, but Scott made me feel he had no one else to care for and had all the time in the world. He even shared some of his personal experiences that let me know he really does “get it”.
Scott lifted a HUGE burden from my shoulders. My husband is one of those patients who does not tolerate sedation well; he takes no medications and seldom consumes alcohol; so, the sedations really hit him hard. Scott assured me he would make absolutely certain to take extra care to be sure my husband could walk into the house. When my husband was ready to go home, Scott reviewed the post-procedure instructions with me again and asked if I had further questions. Even though, by profession, I was very familiar with procedures and disease; when suddenly it was my husband, my best friend, Mr. Invincible, who became ill, it threw me for an unexpected loop. This was an entirely different ball game. My reaction was unexpected and alarming to me. Then Scott came along and made it all all right. He knocked it out of the park with his concern, his empathy, and his professionalism. Scott is truly where he belongs in life and Rex Healthcare is fortunate to have him. Many thanks, Scott!
