Shamika knows members and their families place their trust in her and in turn, she treats patients and loved ones like family. In one situation, an elderly woman underwent a total hip replacement. It was a long, difficult day for the member and her family. Prior to discharge, she needed fresh linens and a clean gown. Shamika responded immediately and rallied another team member to help provide both. This woman could have been "her own mother or grandmother," she said and that empathy—encouraged her to show respect and concern for her comfort and her dignity.
She is a good communicator, and this has a positive impact on the outcomes for her patients. Whether Shamika is explaining a procedure to a member or relaying a report to another team member, she works to improve the safety and satisfaction through clear, thorough communication. In fact, she regularly receives praise from providers, staff, and members for it.
