A week before Christmas, my father had a heart attack. His heart attack was a 99% blockage, which we were told is known as the widow maker. After a successful catheterization and stent placement, my father was sent to the unit where we met Shannon Santoro. My father absolutely adored Shannon. From the beginning, Shannon proved she is proud to be a nurse. She did everything possible to keep my dad comfortable and calm. My father has no medical history prior to this, so for this event to happen had my family concerned. Shannon reassured my father that everything would be okay in time, and to never feel discouraged. In just a very short 12 hours, Shannon impacted my dad’s whole outlook on his new normal. My dad made multiple comments to me such as “Shannon is wonderful '' and “if Shannon wasn’t my nurse today, I would be much more nervous and upset” throughout the day. The reason Shannon holds a special place in my heart is because my dad is my everything. My brother and I lost our mom unexpectedly a few years ago. She did have a few hospital encounters where she was treated very poorly by her care team. The way our mom was treated is something that sticks with us. The thought of my only parent going through the same thing was terrifying. Shannon made sure my dad was treated the exact opposite way. I am nothing but grateful for the care my father received, and I am proud to say that he is home and doing really well. My fathers life was saved, and Shannon made it known that his life is valued. There are not enough thank you’s and kind things to say about Shannon. She was an absolute blessing from above for not only keeping my fathers care as top priority, but also taking care of my brother and I. Shannon will forever hold a special place in my whole family’s heart, especially mine.
