Shannon met them at the front lobby and sat with them, answering any and all questions they had and put them at ease during that frightening time for the patient’s family. She followed up with the family the following week to check on the patient.
Having strong and competent leadership is the backbone of any successful entity. There are multiple levels of leadership, especially here at TUKHS; Shannon Schroeder is one whom I would describe as a strong leader. She is the manager of the KCMO South Pavilion Infusion Clinic and Family Medicine Clinic. Shannon has always been an excellent role model. She is always willing to help whenever we need her without being asked! She's not afraid to attempt an IV stick even though she may be a bit "rusty". She will help room patients when we are short an MA. When walking through the clinic, if a pump is beeping or a call light is on, she will stop and take care of it. From my office, I can often hear her having conversations with patients and families. We occasionally have to make calls to EMS to take unstable patients to the ED. Shannon is always there to help in any way she can, whether it be gathering any necessary supplies or making a phone call to EMS or family. One particular patient had to be sent to ED and we could not reach the family via phone. Shannon met them at the front lobby and sat with them, answering any and all questions they had and put them at ease during that frightening time for the patient’s family. She followed up with the family the following week to check on the patient.
She is a strong nurse; exhibits good judgment when issues arise and has good old-fashioned common sense! She always has a positive attitude and exudes positive energy, no matter what challenges come her way. She is ever-present and visible to staff as well as patients, and her office door is literally “always open”!
She leads by example. She gives and receives respect from patients, family members, and team members. Shannon is able to establish rapport quickly with both patients and families and is an effective active listener who facilitates solutions to problems. She offers sound advice when needed. She is very trusted by the members of the TUKHS team. When hiring new employees, she seeks input from current team members, and she takes the comments/responses into serious consideration. This makes for a unified team group and when there is a good working atmosphere, morale stays high.
She accepts new responsibilities with a smile. She basically manages this entire building and all the staff. She confronts issues head-on and doesn’t try to deflect to anyone else. Shannon is able to delegate effectively to save time. For example, we were having a difficult time ordering supplies during the pandemic. We could not order sufficient numbers of supplies for the staff. Shannon sent the issue “up the chain” and the issue was quickly resolved in a very efficient manner!
She uses resources effectively! Probably one of the most important challenges presented to Shannon was to create the Covid antibody infusion extension clinic. Working initially with Ahvy Whiteside and float pool staff, Shannon was able to get staff on board quickly and efficiently to staff this new population of patients in the ambulatory setting. A separate area was created away from the “regular” infusion patients, and staff were hired as well. Supplies were procured and stocked so that this population of patients was taken care of quickly and efficiently.
Shannon always “has our backs”. She demonstrates consistency and is always fair in her decision-making. She exhibits a positive attitude at all times and is quick to offer encouragement which keeps up staff morale. She promotes staff members’ growth both inside TUKHS and outside of our clinic by encouraging staff to obtain & retain certifications. She also is ever ready with a recommendation letter when requested.
Shannon is budget conscious and at the same time willing to do what is needed in order for staff to provide safe & efficient patient care. She asks for team members’ input in decision-making as well. Staff are encouraged to participate during monthly staff meetings and Shannon is always open to suggestions to improve our area and processes.
Shannon Schroeder is such an asset to not only the infusion clinic but to The University of Kansas Health System! She keeps patients at top of mind when making decisions. Her ultimate goal is to provide a safe and welcoming environment for our patients. We all are better people for knowing and working with Shannon as our leader!
