Shauna took the time to meet the patient where she was and really tried to use her own personal experiences to relate and help.
Shauna has had 2 exemplary examples of Atrium's commitment to compassionate care recently, but these are just 2 bits of the many acts she does daily in her patient care. We recently had a 27-week fetal demise patient sent over from her OB/GYN after fetal heart tones could not be found during office exam. The patient had a history of hypertension and her B/P was high. Once here, the ultrasound confirmed there were no heart tones, and Shauna very compassionately helped the patient deal with her emotions. The patient needed ICU care but she refused because she did not have care for her 5 year old that accompanied her. Shauna reached out to our peds department and made arrangements for the child to stay with them until the child's grandfather could come to get him. The patient still refused to be admitted so Shauna sat on the bed with her and talked to her mother to mother. Shauna explained, I have a 5 year old too. You have to take care of yourself so you can be there to take care of him. Shauna took the time to meet the patient where she was and really tried to use her own personal experiences to relate and help. The mom changed her mind and decided to stay for care.

The second example was just last week. The maternity center received notification that EMS was bringing a patient in after a home birth. It was requested to have the L&D hemorrhage cart in the ED on arrival, as the patient had a postpartum hemorrhage. Shauna was charge this day, and could have assigned someone else to go, but she and another nurse immediately grabbed the hemorrhage cart and went down to the ED to assist. After the patient was stable, Shauna accompanied her back to our unit and continued to care for her. Shauna stayed 1 on 1 with the patient, gained her trust, and became a confidant. Shauna was able to get details on this patient social/home situation and put in the right consults to help her after discharge.
