When a powered probiotic was added to my husband’s daily medicine, Shelby figured out that D loved chocolate, so she always brings a chocolate pudding so that the medication doesn’t taste so bad.
We were in New Smyrna Beach on vacation and my husband experienced severe shoulder and left arm pain. I took him to the ER, and he had a temperature of 102.3. Several tests were run, and the attending physician found septic arthritis in his cervical/thoracic spine. D was admitted to the second-floor medical surgery unit at AdventHealth in New Smyrna Beach. Today is his 8th day at the hospital and we want to recognize Shelby for the outstanding commitment and care that she has provided to D.
Although visiting hours are from 10 am-7 pm due to COVID, Shelby quickly recognized that after our condo rental ended, I had nowhere else to stay. When Shelby is on duty, all of my husband’s IV antibiotics and routine medicines are administered with such kindness and compassion. Shelby goes the extra mile in all of her interactions. She is patient, personable, and is truly the type of nurse that you dream of taking care of a loved one. Shelby thoroughly explains new medications and what they are for in terms that we both understand, and it’s so appreciated. If she doesn’t know the answer, she immediately finds out and comes back to share what she has learned.
When a powered probiotic was added to my husband’s daily medicine, Shelby figured out that D loved chocolate, so she always brings a chocolate pudding so that the medication doesn’t taste so bad (I mean it is powder). Shelby goes way above and beyond for her patients and answering our questions has been so appreciated. While it’s against policy for patients to have overnight guests, Shelby gained clearance for me to sleep in the room with D. Shelby has demonstrated kindness, compassion, and such a professional work demeanor, yet she has the perfect balance of personality and always makes us feel like we are her most important patient.
Shelby monitors D’s progress like he is a member of her family. Through the years we’ve had many hospital experiences but to witness this level of care is unexpected and truly a blessing. Shelby takes the time to answer treatment-related questions and helps us coordinate between Dr. H and the infectious disease doctor. When D was well enough for coffee, he made a joke about wanting a cup of “good coffee” and low and behold a few minutes later, Shelby came in with a fresh cup that included cream and sugar! She took the time to brew a new pot and expeditiously delivered it to him. D has a rare spinal infection and the level of care received in the 10 days he’s been at AdventHealth NSB has been simply amazing and we feel very blessed to have landed at this hospital.
Each night before Shelby leaves her shift, she communicates with the new staff and always tells us that she is leaving for the day. The entire staff has been super, but Shelby is like a ray of sunshine for the patients she serves. She’s treated us like guests in her home and we will be forever grateful. We consider it such a blessing to have met her and are very thankful for her kindness, compassion, and knowledge. Shelby exemplifies all the qualities this Award stands for and she sets the standards high for all medical professionals.
