Shelby Klinger, RN, from the Hackley Campus North 5 / Mother & Baby Unit, our DAISY Award honoree. Jan Kolkema, Clinical Manager of this unit, nominated Shelby for her exceptional display of care and compassion for a baby boy who was born very early and was not expected to survive.
Shelby delicately and skillfully administered palliative care to him. The baby had a faint heartbeat and Shelby was very careful to adjust his blanket, gently folding it across his chest, adjusting the folds, smoothing them with her fingertips. She carefully listened for heart tones and made sure not to disturb him or to cause him any pain. Shelby treated this tiny little life with great dignity, compassion, and respect. During his very short time on earth, he was loved and comforted by a wonderful Nursery nurse – Shelby Klinger. Congratulations, Shelby!
