Just a few weeks ago, and elderly 90+ yr. old Veteran accompanied by a family member came to the clinic after he had fallen at home a few days prior, seeking care as he having continued low back and hip pain. The patient's primary PACT doctor was on leave. Shelia went above and beyond and advocated for her patient to be seen by another provider the same day in the clinic as she felt the patient needed to be seen promptly and should not wait for a next available appointment with his own provider. This is often no easy task in primary care. Upon examination by the alternate provider, it was found that the patient had some bruising to his hip and a significant skin tear that the patient did not even realize that he had. The veteran was treated for his wound, given needed supplies, and treated for his pain. The family and the veteran were grateful to Shelia for her advocacy, concern and her professionalism. I was moved by Shelia's compassion for this elderly Veteran that day and her willingness to step up and advocate for care without hesitation. Shelia Keller has a true heart for nursing, and this is but a small example of the care that she provides to Veterans daily.
