Shouzhen has not only mastered the technical skills required but has elevated them with a compassion that heals hearts and minds. Her unwavering empathy and understanding have made a significant difference in the lives of many, turning the most challenging days into moments of comfort and hope.
During my orientation period of five days at Kaiser San Leandro, Shouzhen Zhou (also known to her coworkers as Susan) was one of my preceptors. Susan's cheerful demeanor, resourcefulness, and unwavering support made me feel as if we were an unbeatable team.
As the Covid-19 pandemic escalated in the early months of 2021, hospital beds in both 5 West and 5 East of our Med/Tele unit filled up with patients. The entire staff, including many physicians, faced sustained stress during this challenging time. When one of my assigned patients passed away, Susan appeared without being asked and provided significant assistance as we rendered postmortem care to the deceased patient with kindness and respect. Her support on that day prevented me from experiencing a breakdown.
While the crisis phase of the Covid-19 pandemic has passed, my admiration for Susan's exceptional qualities as a nurse has only grown. Having worked alongside her for over three years, I can confidently say that Susan is a highly competent, caring, and professional nurse who consistently goes above and beyond in performing her duties. She exemplifies the kind of nurse that I would want to care for if I were to fall seriously ill.
In the countless stories shared by patients and colleagues, one thing stands out: the remarkable compassion and dedication of this nurse. Whether it's the gentle way she soothes a frightened patient, the meticulous care she provides to those in her charge, or the extra hours she spends at a bedside, waiting for a scared family member to arrive, these are the moments that define the essence of excellent nursing.
