Slade was my 3-year-old daughter's (K) nurse when we came into the Piedmont ER for stitches to a laceration to her head. She had fallen on wooden stairs at her school. K is an aspiring clinician of sorts, frequently saying she'll be a doctor or nurse when she grows up. Slade exemplified compassionate and skilled care with K. He spoke to her directly, on her level, and explained what he was doing. He eased her anxiety and engaged her in her care. When she told him of her aspirations to be a nurse one day, he allowed her to briefly assist in mixing the lidocaine into a gel and allowing her (with his assistance and follow-up) to apply the gel to her wound. This thrilled her to pieces. This kind of care exemplifies the skill Slade has to identify what his individual patients need and engage them in their care in pursuit of health literacy and ease anxiety. What might have been a nightmare for an injured toddler and parent ended up being a wonderful experiential learning opportunity for "Nurse K." She was not only given great care but is now bragging to everyone she "helped" with her stitches. Kudos to Slade for the wonderful care, and for demonstrating to the next generation how wonderful and impactful it is to be a nurse.
