There was an elderly couple being seen in consultation. The patient's spouse was nervous, crying, and distraught about her husband's diagnosis. Sonia did not only show an enormous amount of compassion but took the time out to console not only the patient but the spouse as well. She took the time to sit them together, gather their thoughts and in a profound way, speak to them about their diagnosis in a way that was easy for them to comprehend. She answered questions and made the patient feel so comfortable that they stated numerous times that she was their guardian angel because through this journey no one had taken the time to do what she had done for them. That gave the patient a sense of security that we were doing what is best for them.
I see Sonia practice behavior like this not only with her patients, other physicians' patients and coworkers as well. Sonia will see a patient in the hallway who looks lost and she always takes the time to stop and care.
MCI and the BHSF health system is blessed to have an ARNP like Sonia in our system. It takes an extra special person to do what she does and how she does it every day.
