Sonne made sure Mom had anything she needed to make her comfortable and talked with her as if she were a friend rather than an obligation.
My mother had been ill for a few weeks, and I was unable to get her in to see her PCP after a syncopal episode she had one morning. I had taken her to Cone Urgent Care the week before at the urging of her PCP nurse on call, and she was prescribed Prednisone for COPD exacerbation. When I was unable to get in to see her PCP, I decided she needed be evaluated and took her to Wesley Long ER. On the way there, Mom disclosed her left arm was tingling and mostly numb, and both of her hands were numb. She was seen immediately, and several tests were run to rule out many things that could be causing her symptoms. All texts were negative, but it was decided to admit Mom for further testing the next day. Unfortunately, she had to spend the night in the ER due to lack of staffing on the floor. When she was transferred to the 1500 unit, she was assigned a nurse, Sonne. Mom had been through several tests, was unable to eat for many hours, had been stuck on several occasions, was dehydrated, and was not feeling well at all. Sonne came in with a smile and explained to us everything that was to happen, made sure Mom had anything she needed to make her comfortable and talked with her as if she were a friend rather than an obligation. You could see the caring in all she did and said. Though Sonne had many other patients, she knew Mom had been through a tuff time with all the tests, and checked on her regularly…..always with a warm smile and caring words. That meant more at such a trying time for my mother than I can express. When Mom was discharged, Sonne herself pushed Mom in her wheelchair down to the entrance. Mom was glad to be leaving the hospital, but sad to be leaving her friend Sonne.
