Stephanie truly showed this patient her heart and she definitely touched this patient’s heart.
I would like to nominate Stephanie Alonso for the DAISY Award. I had the pleasure of working with Stephanie for two years. Every time I worked with Stephanie she showed unconditional love and compassion for her patients. There was one day that her discernment brought me to tears. We had a patient that was a recent brain injury. Stephanie was helping turn and change the patient and she recognized that the patient needed a communication board to express his needs. Stephanie noticed that the patient was aware of his surroundings and was just having difficulty letting us know what he needed. Stephanie used the communication board and the patient was able to point to a few words.
The word that brought Stephanie to tears was “lonely”. Stephanie grabbed his hand and spoke to him with such a gentle and compassionate voice encouraging him and telling him that she was there. He began to cry as well. Stephanie had to leave to check on her own patients, but this patient grabbed her and clearly said “no” because he did not want her to leave. Stephanie truly showed this patient her heart and she definitely touched this patient’s heart. He felt lonely and Stephanie was there to comfort him. Stephanie was doing a favor to help another nurse, and in return, she did much more for this patient. Stephanie has moved on to another unit now, but that will forever be my memory of her. Stephanie deserves this DAISY Award because she is an example of the type of nurse every patient needs. She is a selfless nurse that gives her all to her patients and she uses God’s gift of discernment to help them.
