My dad was a patient at Floyd Medical Center for several weeks before he passed, most of those days critically ill.
Stephen went above and beyond to care for all of the needs of my dad. He was quiet in his mannerisms, always had a smile on his face and tended to all the needs of my dad. He reminded me very much of my family in how he watched everything around and just handled what came in.
When he had the time, he would sit with my mom and talk with her. The positive attitude, patience, and caring nature offered much comfort to my mom during an extremely hard time for our family. My mom is hard of hearing and Stephen always made sure she understood what was going and made sure she was taken care of. Her daily routine was to stay at the bedside for six to eight hours per day. He always made sure she was okay and I believe when he sensed she was upset or not sure about what was going on, he stopped to talk with her, he would sit with her and watch many tears. Many days he would repeat what had happened to make sure I understood how things were when I arrived each afternoon.
The genuine concern he gave me and my family during this time was a blessing. One day when leaving, I watched another patient start yelling and swing something that could have potentially hurt the nurse or others. He quickly walked into the room and calmed him down. Explaining he would help him and try not to get upset. He was able to get it out of his hand and take care of him. I watched Stephen take care of other patients and families as well as ours was cared for.
Stephen has a positive attitude, acts in a professional manner, is thoughtful, compassionate and caring in all situations, passionate about patient care, takes time to educate and include the patient and family during the care process.
Maybe he reminded my mom of someone special as well, I am not sure. I just wanted to express how much he did for our family and how appreciative we are.
