My son was put on ECMO due to injuries sustained during a car accident. D was on ECMO for 16 days. Out of those 16 days, Steven was his nurse for about 10 of those days. Steven was so great with my son, encouraging him to be strong. Steven was consistently actively trying to wean D off of the sedation, even though D was giving him a lot of trouble. D would thrash around in the bed and try to grab his lines and pull them out. Steven stayed right on top of him and let D fight with the benefit of us getting to see our son open his eyes and react to our voices a little, whatever reaction we could get. Where Steven really excelled was comforting and encouraging my wife and me, as we were going through this tough time watching our 18-year-old son struggle and have such a hard time. Steven is the only reason I survived this terrible event. He supported me and my son when he didn't really have to. He has been the best nurse we have had so far, and we have had some great ones.
