Because of Sue, my father is alive today.
I am writing this nomination from the perspective of a son, not just as a coworker of Sue. My father had open heart valve replacement surgery, and after a stay in the CVICU, was transferred to 4 North to complete his recovery. Sue was the nurse who admitted my father to the floor, and upon her assessment of him, instantly knew that something was wrong. She found that his abdomen was distended and hard, and he was extremely uncomfortable. She immediately reached out to the surgery team and insisted that he needed an abdominal scan right away. The abdominal scan soon revealed a complication known as a cecal bascule, a rare blockage of the bowel, which required immediate surgery that evening. The surgery was successful, as a direct result of Sue's swift action as well as insistence that something was amiss. Because of Sue, my father is alive today. Though a simple thank you does not seem enough, Sue, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for not only saving my father's life but also demonstrating how a nurse should care for their patient.
