Summer helped me and probably my granddaughter feel that she was in good hands, with a nurse who knew exactly what to do.
I brought my 16-year-old granddaughter into the Meriter ER last night because she was starting to have signs of an allergic reaction to some walnuts she had eaten 20-25 minutes earlier. At first, my granddaughter didn’t have strong symptoms, but she was given three oral medications and she’d taken some at home too, to fight signs of a reaction. It was looking like the medication she took at home with me, and the use of her inhaler on the drive there might have been enough to get her through this incident. Summer was the first person who came into the room once we were put in one, and she was clearly familiar with and compassionate about the situation. Summer helped me and probably my granddaughter feel that she was in good hands, with a nurse who knew exactly what to do. She was verbally supportive of my granddaughter as well as myself. We were both very anxious. Half an hour later my granddaughter started rapidly developing hives and was having bad stomach pain, Summer in after seeing the call light I pushed on and took one glance at my granddaughter and said time for the Epi One, and she called out to, and I believe another staff person in the ER also find the doctor. She was calm and all business, asking for a variety of things (she knew were needed or possibly may be needed on her mic or whatever nurses talk to the front desk for help). Honestly, I was so rattled and trying to calm my granddaughter who was miserable, so I missed how she coordinated a full response. Summer got the Epi in her, and all the while was explaining what she was doing and why. She told different staff who came in the room after she asked them to come, exactly what to do, get, and/or do. She did that in a notably thoughtful way, thanking each person as they brought things and/or did things to help. It was a great example of teamwork led by a very competent, reassuring, knowledgeable RN. So much was happening that I can’t remember the details, but my granddaughter improved quite rapidly. It was clear Summer had called for the need for Epi and other things to help my granddaughter not continue to get worse, in time to calm the allergic reaction back down. I felt that she saved my granddaughter’s life. I was struck by how calm she stayed while reassuring us and answering my questions, and at the same time focused on my granddaughter’s status and what was needed. She also appeared very calm and helped us to be calm. Once my granddaughter fell asleep when I had a few questions about her blood pressure, I found Summer to ask about it. She came back in the room with me and reassured me everything with all her vitals was looking normal. I asked about her low blood pressure and she explained why it was low and why no need to worry. I asked twice and she didn’t appear irritated with me asking and calmly reassured me. Summer is a remarkable nurse and I feel very fortunate to have had her for my granddaughter last night, it could’ve throned out differently with different staff. We ended up leaving after several hours of waiting to be sure she’d be safe to go. Today my granddaughter woke up “feeling normal”, with no residual side effects from the medications she’d been given. I’m extremely glad we went to Meriter when we did, and extremely grateful to Summer for being so on top of things and knowing exactly what to do when things got scary.
