The patient's mother was SO relieved and thankful as the patient had already missed a dose the night before. The patient was able to get in and out of the pediatric unit within 30 minutes because Suzanne was willing to stay and help out.
Suzanne is an exceptional charge nurse on the pediatric unit. She is always advocating for her patients and the unit and works hard to try to make sure that the patients on pediatrics get the best care possible. Tonight, after her shift, Suzanne stayed over to take care of business that wasn't able to be taken care of during the day. She wrote emails, followed up with a patient who had left and needed multiple appointments set up, and stayed over to help a patient. An oncologist from OHSU called and asked if we could help one of her patients, who is a series patient. The patient's mom normally accesses his port at home but was having a hard time and the patient needed to receive his Factor. He missed a dose last night because his mom was unsuccessful at accessing him and the oncologist wanted to make sure he didn't miss another dose tonight. Nobody on the night shift working was cleared to access ports, and Suzanne was still here, so I asked if there was any way she would be able to help. Without hesitation, she said, "Of course I can do that." The mother of the patient was excited to see Suzanne as she knew she had accessed her son's port years before. Suzanne grabbed a larger length and bigger gauge needle to see if that was the problem and was able to access the port right away. The patient's mother was SO relieved and thankful as the patient had already missed a dose the night before. The patient was able to get in and out of the pediatric unit within 30 minutes because Suzanne was willing to stay and help out. The mom explained that the patient would have had to go to the ER otherwise and would have been there for hours. She said she was so happy we could help her as the patient has school tomorrow. Suzanne gave the patient's mom tips and tricks on how to access his port easier as it is small for his size, and told her to follow up on possibly getting a larger port placed soon. The mom was so appreciative and thanked her for all of her tips, as she felt they would really help. Suzanne didn't have to stay but CHOSE to. She truly CARES about the pediatric patients we care for. We are lucky to work with her!
