After care at a different facility, our son came to Children's scared of hospitals and all medical personnel. He would cry at the sight of nurses and other caregivers the second they walked into the room. He had multiple blood draws in the ER and attempts at IVs prior to coming to the CICU. Then a magical thing happened. Over the course of the first 4-8 hours of working with our son, Suzie drew him back out. Through kindness, caring, smiles, and play, as well as caring interaction with my wife and me, she got our little boy to smile and play with her. This effort on her part changed our entire admission. He regained some trust in these strangers which translated over to his PT/OT and night and later step down unit nurses. We got our smiling little boy back and the stress for us as parents while not extinguished rapidly came down to a manageable level. We slept and relaxed enough to be able to be better parents to our son (and our two sons at home). My wife and I feel an eternal debt of gratitude to Suzie. It's my honor to be able to share this appreciation with you in hopes that it can somehow relay our gratitude back to Suzie as a person and as an exemplar for the HHI and the hospital she represents.
