Although I am an RN at WellSpan York Hospital, my experience with Tanya was as a patient. On Mother's Day weekend, I received some of the worst news in my life. My husband and I were told at my 12-week Ultrasound, that there was no heartbeat. Needless to say, we were heartbroken. On Sunday night (Mother's Day), I began the miscarriage process and was ultimately rushed to the hospital for severe bleeding and passing out several times at home. I was taken emergently to the OR soon after but unfortunately experienced another complication. This required admission to the hospital to monitor for compartment syndrome. Upon awakening from anesthesia in the OR, I felt severe pain in my right arm. I couldn't understand what was going on, and I was terrified. I went back to sleep, and when I came to again, the PACU nurse, Tanya, was at my side, monitoring and comforting me. I looked at my arm, which was now purple and blue all the way down—it was firm and numb. I heard the words "compartment syndrome" and was immediately scared of the next road I may have to travel. Here I was, heartbroken from losing a baby at 12 weeks, nearly losing my life from the loss of blood, and now—an arm that was a mess. Over the next several hours in the PACU, Tanya was my angel. She wrapped her wings around me and was diligent in keeping my arm her priority. She measured it, kept it warm and elevated, and treated my pain. Tanya allowed my husband to visit me, called on the best IV RN to place an IV, and continually re-assessed every intervention she had done. Tanya made me feel cherished and protected, and my worried mind was eased as long as she was near. She took the time to ask about me, offered her condolences, and even shared some of herself with me—all while providing the highest level of care. I have been working in hospitals for the past 26 years, with the last decade being a critical care RN. I have seen many patients and their families struggling with illness and its effects. The BEST healthcare providers are not only the ones with knowledge and expertise but the ones who take their time and treat others with compassion and concern. Tanya is indeed an expert at her craft, but she is also empathetic and gentle. She is the kind of nurse we would all want on our worst days, and she is the nurse I hope I can be as well. Tanya was the brightest star in my otherwise dismal sky that awful morning.
