One evening she insisted that I review preoperative instructions that were in remote data from the Pittsburgh VA. Even though the initial instruction sheet (which is normally sent to the patient) did not include this, she was concerned that Preoperative chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) bathing had not been ordered for the patient's total knee revision surgery, scheduled the next morning.
Therefore, I went into the Pittsburgh VA documentation and found telephone documentation of a request for CHG bathing.
Because RN Mattocks notified me in a timely fashion, I was able to order the two chlorhexidine gluconate skin preparation treatments for the patient, in preparation for his surgery.
Her professionalism and concern for this Veteran will have a positive outcome and avoid potentially having to cancel or postpone his surgery.
