While in CCU rounding, I observed RN Tina Gouw in an elderly male patient's room playing Frank Sinatra music as she encouraged the patient to relax while receiving Ativan for restlessness after recent Extubation. Frank Sinatra was one of the patient's familiar and loved singers. The patient thought he was in a "toaster oven," and Tina reassured him that he was in the hospital and was safe. A trusting relationship was established, and the patient verbalized some of his memorial years and experiences as a young man. The patient was calm at this point and enjoyed the music and conversation provided by this wonderful, most caring health care RN. Tina always goes the extra mile to provide comfort and care to her patients. She is a sensitive, highly knowledgeable critical care RN, mentor, and an asset to MCK and the Critical care team. Thank you, Tina, for all you do! The sharing of familiar stories and references to his wife lessened the patient's fears and helped the patient regain his orientation.
