I would like to nominate Tom Thornblade for The DAISY Award because of his many years of dedication to Surgical Services, his team, and the patients. Tom displays such ownership of his team. He can be found here all hours of the night and on weekends, and he is a constant support for the OR, especially the heart team. This sense of ownership and commitment was on display a few weeks ago. We had a patient in the OR whose wife is a retired MercyOne employee, that was not doing very well. Tom had to go back and forth between the wife and the OR delivering updates. This patients wife was really struggling and Tom told her he would stay with her as long as he needed to until someone else could come and support her. After over 12 hours of standing in the OR he followed the patient up to the ICU were he continued to support his team and this patients wife. She needed to drive up to the University of Minnesota by herself the night and despite it being 9:30 pm, Tom took to the time to Mapquest her trip and print out step by step instructions. He knew how overwhelmed she was and wanted to do anything he could to take away some of her stress. This is just one example of many that Tom has displayed over the years of compassion and stewardship. Thank you, Tom, for all you do for our colleagues and our patients!
