Tony can be often seen interacting with staff on all units with a smile that is contagious.
Great Leaders can be described as approachable, humble, inspirational, and passionate. Since 2008 Tony has consistently demonstrated each of these traits every time he comes to work at Kona Community Hospital.
Whenever situations arise that require additional resources, Tony consistently knows exactly what is needed, where to allocate the resources, and how to utilize the unique skills and values of others. He has been seen on various units answering phones, working as a telemetry technician, answering call lights, and aiding staff with patient care as needed. He does this all without wanting recognition or praise. He does it for the patients and staff.
Tony can be often seen interacting with staff on all units with a smile that is contagious. He rounds on each of the units boosting morale by engaging with staff and being an active listener. He gives his full attention while gathering all of the facts before making any judgments. He has developed a safe space for staff to come talk to him, so they can open up and truly feel heard. Tony is emotionally present for those conversations, and he offers guidance and support while displaying his own vulnerability.
Passionate Leadership is something many leaders strive for years to accomplish. Tony accomplished this many years ago and continues to display his passion regularly. Recently a very hard-working staff member was struggling with housing, transportation, and passing the NCLEX to become a Registered Nurse. Tony consistently encouraged this individual by checking in on them to see how studies were going, communicating with the employee's direct manager regarding transportation needs, but most of all Tony never passed judgment on this individual. This individual passed their NCLEX two months ago and wanted to make sure that Tony knew how he helped them reach that accomplishment. Tony saw the greatness this person possessed deep inside, while others only saw the surface and were quick to pass judgment.
Tony has overcome many personal obstacles that few knew he was struggling with. He is so humble that he would never want the conversation to be about him. He constantly asks others how they are doing and makes sure that no one is fighting their own battles alone.
Being an inspiring Nursing Leader is something that comes from years of engaging with patients and staff. Praising moments of accomplishments and triumphs, along with being present regardless of the circumstance.
