I have a new patient in Hospice who has a new colostomy. We were having a lot of difficulty managing the appliance due to continuing leakage. The patient and her family were becoming quite anxious about this. They did not feel that they were given enough teaching while in the hospital.
I called Tonya in the wound clinic for some advice, and although she had some great advice, she made a home visit with me to trouble shoot. The family was extremely appreciative of this visit. She did figure out which type of appliance was appropriate and it has been great ever since. Sure we still have leaks but nothing like it was before Tonya's visit.
In her visit, I saw so much caring and compassion from Tonya towards this family. She went above and beyond her call of duty to help me with this patient. The family was very pleased with her visit, her professionalism, knowledge, and her compassion. She even arranged with Dr. F for a follow-up visit in conjunction with another visit that she had scheduled already. She did this so the patient would only have to go out once.
I have to admit that I was feeling very overwhelmed with this patient and the new stress of the colostomy. Tonya came to my rescue and had everything on the mend with one visit. I am so grateful for her experience and expertise and how willing she was to help out.
