I am a hospital teacher on the 7th floor here at UVA. I was hit head-on by a drunk driver and my life was forever changed. I then became a patient here at UVA. After spending many days in ICU on the 5th floor, I was moved to 6 East where I met Tracy. I was broken from my neck down and worried if I would walk again. There was not a lot to be happy about until I met Tracy. She made me smile from the moment I met her! I looked forward to the evenings because I knew that is when she was going to arrive to take care of me.
Tracy was amazing! She took the time to show she cared regardless of how busy she was and she always made a point to keep me smiling. In my traumatic event, Tracy was my light. Tracy comforted me like no other. I will never forget her kindness, care and sense of humor which I needed at that time more than anything. Solid communication skills are a basic foundation for any career. But for nurses, it's one of the most important aspects of the job. Tracy has excellent communication skills, especially when it comes to speaking and listening. Tracy was always on top of her game and made sure that she clearly understood me and anything I needed.
Now I have fully recovered and I am back at work here at UVA. Many days on my way home from work, walking to my car I will see Tracy heading to work. I often well up with tears when I see her as I know she is going headed in to work her magic for some other patient who needs her dearly.
Tracy is a truly stellar nurse! She is able to advocate for her patients and anticipate their needs. She has been a blessing in my life in so many ways!
***
Tracy makes sure patients know what's going on. She remains calm and collected, even in the face of tragedy or trauma. Tracy empathizes with her patients, without letting it get personal and interfere with doing her job. Tracy is quick on her feet, ready to assess the situation and respond. But the biggest impact Tracy makes on patient care is that she pays attention to her patients, from the big issues to the little details. Tracy exhibits all of these qualities, each with a smile and at the same time puts a smile on her patients' faces too. I admire and respect Tracy's impact on patient care.
Note: This is Tracy's second DAISY Award!
